Excellent book. Helpful descriptions and perfect pictures.

Excellent book! I own the previous edition of the "Bulgaria: DK Eyewitness Travel Guide" and this new and improved version remains the BEST and most complete travel guide on Bulgaria, period. It has the perfect balance of key travel destinations (historic, cultural, natural, etc.) and hidden gems throughout the country. A few highlights:

(1) Wine Regions - I like how they've added the "Wine Regions" section, which allows the travel to learn about and experience Bulgaria's indigenous wines and its long history of wine-making dating back to antiquity.

(2) Valley of Thracian Kings - Another useful addition is the "Valley of Thracian Kings" section, which outlines a good itinerary for the mystical Thracian tombs dotted throughout the country.

(3) Hiking Trails - Finally, I like how they've highlighted that Bulgaria is one of the best hiking destinations in Europe with its many mountains and marvelous hiking trails.

One recommendation for next edition is to include a few pages on Bulgaria's many mineral baths and spa towns, which date back to Roman times and are undiscovered gems tucked away in the mountainous regions.

Great job overall though!

Although I used the Lonely Planet guide book most of the time to plan my free time while I toured through Bulgaria for 2 weeks recently, I found this guide book very informative and well-written, when I looked back at what I had just seen. Certainly, the hours of operation and other changing information was much more reliable in this book than in the Lonely Planet book, which was written in 2012. I think this book was 2015. Bulgaria is evolving as an EU an NATO member, from a Soviet block country, and has lots to offer, even though it doesn't have anything "blockbuster" about it.

This guide told me everything I needed to know for my visit to Bulgaria - a country I knew very little about. As a result, we had a wonderful time.

This book was a great help. It provided insight before I arrived. My Spanish teammates were amazed that it provide detailed, accurate information for restaurants and other attractions in Gabrovo, a nice town definitely off the beaten track.

DK Eyewitness books are the ONLY travel guides I buy. Best maps and attention to details. Make sure you get the most up to date book available.

I recently traveled to Bulgaria for an international rowing competition. The event was in Plovdiv, the second largest city in Bulgaria. I did not find the coverage of the city and the surroundings to be particularly helpful or detailed. I ended up finding most of the information I wanted on various internet sites. In the end, I looked at this book for about 30 minutes. I spent several hours on internet sites where more sites and restaurants were listed, and there was the additional benefit of reviews.

It's not enough money to really matter to me, but knowing what I know now, I probably would not have bought this book. I will most likely donate it to my local library. If you are going and will have internet access, you most likely won't need this. The one thing you may find very helpful is the Google app that translates the text on products or on signs. Appropriately enough, it is called Google Translate. It translates whatever is on your camera screen and does not require an internet connection. It is particularly useful if you have dietary restrictions and want to read the labels of food products.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeded My Expectations😊

This is a very helpful and in-depth guide to Bulgaria.

Featuring maps, tourist spots, photos, events, seasonal information, weather, geography..... of the various cities and regions in Bulgaria.

Excellent quality paper and presentation throughout, I even appreciated the size of this book which would easily fit in a tote or larger purse but not TOO small.

I would definitely buy another guide in this series as required based on the quality and value of this one.😊

Helpful votes are always appreciated!

I have bought quite a lot of the DK travel guides in the past and this one lived up well to my expectations. As with all DK travel guides it is very well laid out with good illustrations, maps and information. My only quibble would be in the Language section at the back of the book and the "Menu Decoder" which has no rhyme or reason as to its order and as such is difficult to find a particular word without scanning the whole list. Why not an alphabetical list or groups of foods/drinks?

4.0 out of 5 stars

This book is an absolute gem. Beautiful. Full of information, ideas and awesome pictures. This is the best travel guide of Bulgaria. I have been traveling around Bulgaria for many years and I have been to 90% of the places described in this book, but I have never seen before such a compact and beautiful collection of the most valuable places of interest in one book. This book is a must for everyone planning to visit Bulgaria.
